July 31, 2020

The Venezuelan Supreme Court (TSJ) said on Friday that it is appropriate to request extradition of former oil minister and former president of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) state-owned company Rafael Ramírez, who is accused of corruption in the South American country.

The Cassation Chamber has indicated that it agrees to the extradition request to Italy, so that Ramírez “will be prosecuted in Venezuela for allegedly committing crimes of fraudulent embezzlement, bypassing the bidding process, and association”.

He stressed that his decision that “a firm commitment will be accepted before the Italian Republic that citizens will be judged only for their alleged involvement in the commission of the above crimes, with the guarantees set out in the Venezuelan constitution”.
