Sri Lankan Prime Minister and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa won the parliamentary elections held on Wednesday with almost 60 percent of the vote.
His party, the Sri Lanka Popular Front (SLPP), won 59 percent of the vote and 145 seats according to the election results of the local newspaper “Adaderana”.
According to the SLPP, the opposition alliance Smagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, which has achieved 23.9 of support and 54 seats. This alliance was established in the run-up to the elections and welcomes the former chairman of the Sri Lanka National Unity Party (UNP).
The elections have been postponed since April due to the coronavirus pandemic, although the situation was under control with fewer than 3,000 cases and 11 deaths across the country.
