The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has selected Finance Minister Olaf Scholz as a candidate for the firm in the next federal elections on October 24, 2021.
Scholz received support at a meeting on Monday with the two leaders of the SPD, Norbert Walter-Borjans and Saskia Esken, who paradoxically defeated the current candidate in last year’s competition to chair the political party.
“We know this decision is an unexpected turn for some, but we ask you to trust our path,” Esken said himself on Twitter. “We saw Olaf Scholz as a reliable partner who can and wants to fight for a social democratic policy in this country and who shares our vision of a just society,” he said.
Scholz, a former mayor of Hamburg who increased his political capital from the Ministry of Finance, thanked Esken and Walter-Borjans and hoped to lead a “successful election campaign in a strong team”.
