The second Iranian scientist released by the US authorities arrives in Tehran

June 8, 2020

Iranian scientist Mayid Taheri, released by the US authorities, landed in Tehran early Monday, days after both countries released two other prisoners as part of an alleged exchange.

Last week, just a day apart, the releases of Iranian scientist Sirius Asgari and former U.S. military officer Michael White were crossed. A new delivery was completed this Monday, again with Switzerland as a mediator since the United States and Iran have no diplomatic relations.

Taheri was greeted by Deputy Secretary of State Hussein Yaveri Ansari on arrival in the Iranian capital after being detained in the United States for 16 months. The scientist has confirmed that he has been accused of violating international sanctions despite alleging that his work was limited to developing a cancer vaccine, according to the IRNA agency.

Taheri thanked the government for their efforts, particularly the head of Iranian diplomacy, Mohamad Yavad Zarif, although they have made it clear since the Ayatollah regime that there has been no direct contact with the Donald Trump administration.

A spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, Abbas Musavi, told IRNA that everything was done “with the help of the Swiss government”, which he thanked for the help. “There were no direct negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States government,” he added.
