The Russian ambassador to the USA accuses Washington of “twisting the facts” when expelling diplomats

The Russian Ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, has accused Washington of “distorting” the reality of the expulsion of Russian diplomats from the North American country.

For Antonov, the US State Department is “cunning again”. “He tries to evade public opinion nationally and internationally by deliberately twisting the facts.”

He referred to the words of Jalina Porter, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry, who pointed out that the departure of 55 Russian diplomats from the country “cannot be regarded as a punitive measure”.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has also made it clear that if the requirements are not met, “the immunity and other diplomatic privileges that Russian embassy staff are entitled to will be withdrawn”.

According to information from the Russian news agency TASS, Antonov’s position directly implies the “de facto expulsion” of Russian workers. “The United States is trying to restrict Russia’s sovereign rights,” he complained.

For his part, Porter has insisted that the United States only ask Russian diplomats what Moscow demands of the Americans. However, he has indicated that Washington will continue to discuss the matter with the Russian government.

The US defended on Monday that the departure of 27 Russian diplomats from the country was not an “expulsion” as Moscow could replace the staff. However, on Saturday Antonov Antonov reported the departure of 27 Russian diplomats who were stationed with their families in the North American country. “On January 30th, 27 people and their families will be leaving us and a similar number will be leaving on June 30th,” he said.
