May 30, 2020

Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban paid two fines totaling 3,000 lei, around 620 euros, for smoking in a public, closed place and without a mask after distributing a photo on social networks in which Orban was accompanied by several people see was minister.

The government stated the fines in a statement saying that “the laws must be complied with equally by every citizen regardless of their position.” The amount allocated is the maximum expected for these violations.

The picture appeared on social media on Friday and corresponds to Orban’s birthday, which was celebrated on May 25. The response on social networks has been to reproach the “hypocrisy” and “double standards” of the same government, which impose strict hygiene standards to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
