“A group of officials of the Venezuelan Embassy in Brazil contacted us to inform us that they recognize President Juan Guaidó. They proceeded to open the doors and voluntarily hand over the diplomatic headquarters to the legitimately accredited representation in Brazil,” he explained.

This action, as noted, “was immediately communicated” to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry. Belandria has also offered to “mediate” with local authorities to help officials who decide not to leave Brazil, who has also been guaranteed “all their labor rights.”

“We value the recognition of the legitimate government of President Guaidó and we ask all the officials accredited in the Embassy and in the seven consulates of Venezuela to adopt this same decision and join their work to work for all Venezuelans residing in Brazil,” has added.

The first reaction of the Government of Nicolás Maduro has come through the mouth of his Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, who has denounced on Twitter that the diplomatic legation had been “invaded by force” and has asked for respect for the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations .

“We hold the Government of Brazil responsible for the safety of our staff and facilities,” he warned in his message. Brazil is one of the governments of the region that recognizes Guaidó as the legitimate president of Venezuela, to the detriment of Nicolás Maduro.

Arreaza has also shared a video in which the Venezuelan business manager in Brazil is accompanied by “all” Embassy staff. “The matrix of the violent right on defections is absolutely false,” said the minister.

In this video, the diplomat said that the Embassy had been “besieged” by “irregular citizens” who “broke into Venezuelan sacred territory.” He has also reiterated his support and that of his team to Maduro: “We are unrestrictedly standing and in support of the legitimately constituted Government.”
