El Salvador prosecutors have opened an investigation into the alleged negotiations that Nayib Bukele’s government had with the Mara Salvatrucha, the country’s main gang, held several prisons and dependencies during the day on Monday.

Specialized prosecutors from the Directorate against Impunity and Corruption conducted searches in the headquarters of the General Directorate of Criminal Centers (DGCP), as well as in the detention centers of Izalco (Sonsonate) and Zacatecoluca (La Paz) to look for possible evidence The negotiations, which the newspaper published last week ‘ El Faro ‘were unveiled.

According to these documents, the representatives of the government of Bukele, including the director general of the penal institutions, Osiris Luna, and the director of the Directorate for the Reconstruction of the Social Fabric, Carlos Marroquín, and the Mara Salvatrucha (M-13) negotiated a reduction in the number of Murders, jail benefits for gang members, and long-term promises related to the 2021 Legislature.
