Taiwanese President Tsai Ing Wen opened her second and final terms on Wednesday with the promise that she will never allow China to “deteriorate” its international status and resume the territory to the Beijing authorities.

Tsai was re-elected in January with 57.1 percent of the vote. By founding the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), which defends Taiwan’s independence, she managed to keep the majority in the Taiwanese parliament.

“We will not accept that the Beijing authorities use the” one country, two systems “principle to degrade Taiwan and undermine the strait status quo. We are determined to defend this principle,” said the President of Taiwan . at the inauguration of his second term as president.

The Chinese government resorted to the “one country, two systems” premise to regain control of the former colonies of Hong Kong and Macau. Tsai emphasized that his government was still open to dialogue with Beijing and advocated maintaining positive relationships based on “peace, parity, democracy and dialogue”.
