The president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, has admitted the resignation of the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, and has announced the opening of a period of consultations with the various parties to study how to solve the current political crisis, according to the Head of State.
The Presidency, which has ordered the Government to remain in office, has announced that the round of contacts will begin on Wednesday with a telephone conversation between Matarella and his predecessor in office, Giorgio Napolitano, who has already experienced similar crises during his term.
At 4:00 pm and 4:45 pm, the current head of state will meet with the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, and for the rest of the day meetings with minor parties are scheduled. The turn of the formations with the greatest representation – Democratic Party (PD), Forza Italia, La Liga and the 5 Star Movement (M5S) – will arrive on Thursday.
This round of contacts will be used to determine if there are options to establish an alternative government or it is necessary to call early elections, as requested by Matteo Salvini League.
Conte announced that he would resign from office during a speech in the Senate and attributed to Salvini the responsibility of a crisis that breaks the current coalition between the League and the 5 Star Movement (M5S).
