June 15, 2020

Filipino journalist and director of the Rappler news portal, Maria Ressa, was sentenced on Monday by a Manila court for cyber-defamation in a historic trial that critics see as a new attack by the country’s president, Rodrigo Duterte. against freedom of the press.

The 56-year-old Ressa has been running “Rappler” since 2012, a news portal that has criticized the Duterte government and, in particular, the controversial fight against drugs, which according to the United Nations has so far left almost 9,000 deadly victims.

The journalist and her colleague Reynaldo Santos were sentenced for an article published by ‘Rappler’ in May 2012, in which the businessman and plaintiff Wilfredo Keng was linked to human trafficking and drug smuggling.
