The Lao parliament elected the General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LRPA), Zongloun Sisouliz, as the country’s new president on Monday, replacing Bounhang Vorachit, who has held the post since 2016.
Sisouliz announced during the meeting in which Fanjam Vifavanh was also elected Prime Minister of the country that he would work with the party and the heads of state to create the conditions for stability, economic growth and poverty reduction in Laos.
He also stressed that he will respect the country’s constitution and laws and act to protect the legitimate interests of the people, according to the state-run KPL news agency. Parliament also approved the composition of the new government, which will consist of 17 ministries.
At the sessions in parliament, which will last until Friday, the discussion and approval of other relevant issues are on the agenda, for example a report on the electoral commission and the organizational structure of the National Assembly.
