The military coup plotters in Mali promise to hold elections “within a reasonable time”.

The group of military coup leaders who forced the resignation of Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita announced early Wednesday the creation of a National People’s Salvation Committee to lead the country to hold elections in “a timely manner” and restore stability.

The announcement was broadcast by rebel military group spokesman Ismael Wague on state TV channel ORTM1, who, hours before the broadcast of Keita’s resignation speech, assured him that he was following the army’s decision to avoid “bloodshed”.

“We, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, have decided to stand up before the people and history and insure the state afterwards,” began Wague, who insisted that all international treaties be protected.
