The mayor of the most important city in Northern Siberia resigns after a diesel accident and the COVID-19 outbreak

Rinat Ajmetchin, Mayor of the city of Norilsk, the largest in Northern Siberia, resigned Monday after a conflict with regional authorities over the Corona virus and a serious diesel accident in June.

“Ajmetchin has resigned,” said the City Council press service and gathers the official Russian news agency Sputnik.

Ajmetchin has told the press that he made the decision to resign after the regional authorities expressed their distrust of his work. “Negative information about me, my work and the data I have provided has appeared in the media and in the news services. (…) They expressed mistrust of my work. I made the decision to submit the resignation,” he said.
