The Mayor of the Belgian city of Bruges, Dirk De Fauw, is developing positively from the knife attack he suffered on Saturday from a client of his law firm.
The 62-year-old mayor, who is a lawyer by profession, had to undergo emergency surgery last Saturday because of a 14 centimeter neck wound.
De Fauw needed 24 stitches and a night of recovery in the intensive care unit because of the severe blood loss from the attack.
De Fauw described the attacker as a “very worried” person whom he had to defend several times in court. “Fortunately, the knife was very short,” he admitted in an interview with the VRT station.
The suspect was arrested for questioning. The mayor himself has ruled out any political motive for the attack.
