June 20, 2020

The Mayor of Bruges, Dirk De Fauw, is gravity-stable after being stabbed in the throat on Saturday in an investigated incident for which a suspect was arrested.

The 62-year-old De Fauw had to undergo an emergency operation in the hospital because of a stab wound to the neck, his wife confirmed to the newspaper ‘Het Nieuwsblad’.

“He is not in mortal danger. His vital organs are not affected. He was very lucky,” said his wife.

The incident occurred in De Fauw’s office, which links his work as a mayor with his profession as a lawyer. The suspect is said to have been one of his customers.

The Bruges police will give further details of the incident at a press conference this afternoon.
