Maltese Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis exchanged hundreds of messages in 2019 with businessman Yorgen Fenech, who was viewed by investigators as the alleged “brain” behind the bombing that killed investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, according to the local newspaper ‘ The Times of Malta ‘reports.
The newspaper has indicated that the current Justice Minister exchanged around 700 messages with the Maltese businessman between June and October 2019. The messages are contained in a larger packet of data that is being presented in court as evidence against Fenech.
In November, weeks after the news broke, Fenech was arrested and prosecuted for complicity in the murder of the investigative journalist, who died on October 16, 2017 and was the victim of a device explosion in his company’s basement vehicle.
Zammit Lewis and Fenech met for lunch several times in 2019, even after it was revealed that the businessman was the owner of the previously secret company 17 Black, which was based in a tax haven and at the center of a property related to a concession for corruption a power plant that Caruana Galizia unveiled.
