The main opposition parties in Venezuela have accused the government of Nicolás Maduro of having “imposed” the new rectors on the National Electoral Council (CNE) by the Supreme Court (TSJ) and have announced the results of the general election this year can be held.

The TSJ issued an ultimatum to the National Assembly last week to provide the CNE with a list of candidates, but the Chavismo-controlled judiciary finally took the initiative and appointed a short list of principals. According to the opposition, “very serious irregularities” were committed.

The majority of opposition parties, including Voluntad Popular – including the President of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó – Acción Democrática, Un Nuevo Tiempo and Primero Justicia have joined their votes to condemn “illegitimacy” to renew the electoral body.
