Lebanese President Michel Aoun warned this Saturday that there is nothing to suggest that the investigation into last week’s major explosion in the port of Beirut will move quickly as the situation appears to have become complicated in the past few hours.
“We have the will to complete the investigation as soon as possible, but the situation has turned out to be more complex and we cannot therefore complete it at the speed we would like,” he said in an interview with BFMTV.
Aoun noted that the research continues to examine any hypotheses that are “on the table”. The main hypothesis is the negligence in the maintenance of the ammonium nitrate store that caused the explosion: 2,700 tons that destroyed the port and much of the city.
However, the investigation does not rule out an “intentional explosion or even an air attack.
