A committee of the Israeli parliament voted on Monday for the immediate reopening of swimming pools and gyms. This was a setback for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to close these facilities due to the increase in coronavirus cases in the country.
The Knesset ad hoc coronavirus committee held the vote after the Prime Minister asked the president of the organization, Yifat Shasha-Biton, to reject the proposal, as reported by the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post.
Netanyahu Likud’s Shasha-Biton voted in favor of the reopening, although a few minutes before the Prime Minister’s office announced that both he and Health Minister Yuli Edelstein had decided to keep these facilities closed.
Likud-Knesset leader Miki Zohar, called for the removal of Shasha-Biton, saying: “It is a pity that a coalition member in Parliament has chosen a populist and irresponsible way at the expense of the fight by the authorities against the outbreak of the coronavirus,” as reported by “The Times of Israel”.
