The independent Russian news portal Newsru announced its closure on Monday due to the “political situation in the country” and pressure on the media.
“Our view of the world is increasingly different from the image that is defended by the state media,” said the portal team in an editorial published as a farewell.
As a result, the text collects: “The main opponents have been excluded.” “After 21 years, the site can no longer be funded.” “We stopped working for economic reasons, but this was caused by the political situation,” they said.
Independent journalists have been targeted by the authorities in recent years. The authorities recently called Meduza, a news portal critical of the government, a “foreign agent”.
Meduza has warned that this category has resulted in them losing numerous advertisers, resulting in a huge financial loss. This has led to a reduction in employee salaries and the closure of some offices.
“We had to write more and more about the approval of restrictive laws that could affect us at any time,” denounced Newsru. “Real people and sources of information are increasingly being referred to as extremists and foreign agents,” he warned.
