The Higher Council of the Libyan State rejects direct dialogue with Haftar during the ceasefire

August 22, 2020

The Higher Council of State, the highest advisory body of the Libyan government recognized by the international community, assured on Saturday that, despite the ceasefire declared in the past between the two parties, it will under no circumstances hold a peace dialogue with the rebel marshal Jalifa Haftar Friday.

Instead, the Council issued a statement recommending that the ceasefire be used to end the “state of insurgency” in the African country.

“Any dialogue or agreement must come under the auspices of the political ceasefire agreement, which provides that it can only take place between elected bodies,” said the Council, referring to the agreement signed in Skhirat, Morocco.

The organization also calls for the immediate re-opening of crude oil exports from the east of the country in the hands of the East Libyan armed forces led by Haftar.
