The first round of regional talks cannot solve the internal crisis in Mali

Mali’s leaders are trying to maintain political stability in the country on Friday after several African presidents’ mediation efforts have temporarily failed to save the open conflict between the Malian government and the opposition.

The Presidents of Senegal, Macky Sall; Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara; Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou; Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, tried to start the first mediation talks in the capital Bamako on Thursday, with uncertain results late Thursday, sources near the meeting said.

The regional presidents were received by Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, a week after a delegation led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, without agreement, resolved his efforts to end the political crisis in the African country.

Jonathan rejected the main opposition group, the Patriotic Forces Movement Group (M5-RFP), calling on June 5 to resign the Mali president to resolve the crisis, arguing that “ECOWAS cannot preside over the removal of an elected president “”
