The EU will decide “in a few days” whether the use of the antiviral remdesivir to treat patients with Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, should be approved, according to the Swedish authorities. The original use of this medicine was to fight Ebola.
The Director of the Infectious Diseases Department of the Swedish Medicines Agency, Charlotta Bergqvist, told TV4 in statements to TV4 that the EU is processing the new medicine in a high-priority way and the outcome will be known “in a few days”. .
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the emergency use of this experimental treatment on Friday after some patients treated with remdesivir had a faster recovery after catching the coronavirus.
