The President of the Committee of the Regions of the EU, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, called on the leaders of the bloc to reach an agreement on the recovery plan to revitalize the economy and the European budget in Brussels at the summit scheduled for 16 and 17 July be able to proceed with a reactivation as quickly as possible.
Given the increasingly commented possibility that this appointment will not lead to an agreement, Tzitzikostas said in an interview for Europa Press that leaders need to act quickly as a delay in the pact can pose new problems for the economy. “We have to make a decision at the summit of 16 and 17. There is a crisis now and we have to give the answer now, not later. We have to act now,” he defended himself.
The Governor of Thessaloniki has welcomed the European Commission’s proposal for the recovery fund and European accounts as they have included calls from the Committee of the Regions for greater funding for health systems and more points for cohesion policy.
In his opinion, the Brussels approach is the best answer to “populists and Eurosceptics” and shows the benefits of EU membership in difficult times due to the pandemic. “The ball is now on the roof of the Council and Parliament, which must act quickly. The discussions are good, but we have to avoid any delay that harms efforts in the face of the crisis,” he said.
