The EU expresses its strong condemnation of the execution in Iran of athlete Navid Afkari

The EU on Monday criticized the execution in Iran of Navid Afkari, a wrestling champion who was sentenced to death for the murder of a security agent in protests in 2018.

Afkari was arrested in September of that year and sentenced to two death sentences for two crimes related to the murder of a secret service agent in Shiraz on August 2 of the same year.

In a statement, the European Diplomacy Bureau “strongly condemns” the execution of the Iranian citizen, recalls that human rights are a central element of relations between Iran and the European bloc and stated that it will continue to deal with these cases in the US his contacts with Tehran.

The EU insists that it is invariably against the death penalty as it is a “cruel and inhuman” punishment and a denial of human dignity and integrity.
