EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell on Friday expressed “deep concern” about the “increasing” use of the mechanism by the United States of sanctions or threats to European companies and interests “”
In a statement, Borrell said that the EU “has witnessed the evolution of this trend in the cases of Iran, Cuba, International Criminal Court (ICC) and more recently in the Nordstream 2 and Turk Stream projects”.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo threatened this Wednesday with sanctions for companies involved in the development of new sections of the Russian Nord Stream and Turk Stream gas pipelines that will carry natural gas from Russia to Germany and Turkey.
In this context, Borrell has pointed out that “the European Union is fundamentally against the application of sanctions by third countries against European companies that do legitimate business”. She also “believes that the extraterritorial application of sanctions violates international law.”
