At least three people have died as a result of the repression of demonstrations that have taken place in Minsk and other cities in recent days against the re-election of Alexander Lukashenko as President of Belarus in the August 9 elections, the Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday .
“We regret to say that the citizen of the Republic of Belarus, Guennadi Shutov, died on August 19th,” the health authority was quoted as saying by the Sputnik news agency.
Shutov was injured on August 13 during protests in Brest (southwest). He was hospitalized the same day, but “his condition deteriorated dramatically” on Tuesday and “despite the efforts of the doctors, the patient’s life was not saved”.
This brings the death toll from post-election violence to three. The Ministry of Health increased it to two on Monday. Up until then, only one person had been pronounced dead in the opposition protests.
