The death toll from the sinking of a boat off the coast of Tunisia, with which dozens of migrants tried to get to Europe, has risen to 45, the authorities in the African country have confirmed.
Authorities initially said 20 people had died, although dozens were reported missing. Twelve bodies were recovered on Wednesday, and thirteen more were found on Thursday, reports the Tunisian news channel Mosaique FM.
According to the authorities, the bodies were found on the coasts of the island of Kerkena and on Eluza beach in Yebeniana. 18 of the migrants have already been buried in the country.
Anis Hakim, head of the Red Cross in Sfax, said in statements to the German news agency DPA that the search efforts in the region are continuing to find the other eight occupants of the boat.
