The death toll in the port of Beirut rises to 154

There are already 154 deaths from the explosion of a deposit of more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate in the port of the Lebanese capital Beirut last Tuesday, as the country’s health minister, Mohamad Hasan, announced this Friday.

The minister has estimated that the explosion, which devastated the port and caused severe material damage across the city, has already left around 5,000 people, some of whom are in very serious condition, according to a press conference by the official Lebanese NNA News agency.

A total of 16 people are currently detained in connection with the investigation into the port explosion, as the incumbent State Commissioner of the Lebanese Military Court, Fadi Akiki, reports in statements on the Naharnet portal.

Rescuers are expected to accelerate as rescuers arrive from different countries as part of international aid to the Lebanese capital.
