The armed forces of the Saudi military coalition have destroyed a drone laden with explosives that was fired by the Houthi rebels towards the Saudi city of Najran on the border with Yemen, according to a spokesman for the military alliance.

The coalition has stated that since Friday it has destroyed six explosive-laden drones that were targeting southern Sudanese territory. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have said twice that they have attacked “sensitive and military targets” with drones in southern Saudi Arabia, including Abha Airport, since Friday.

Forces loyal to the Saudi Arabia-backed Yemeni government and the Houthi rebels have been fighting since late 2014 in what is now seen as a power conflict between the region’s two main rival powers, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The Houthis quickly took control of the country’s capital, Sana’a, and its environs, prompting Yemeni President Abd Rabu Mansur Hadi and his executive branch to move south.
