The Chinese government recommends extending Hong Kong’s legislative mandate after the postponement of the elections

The Chinese State Council this Saturday tabled a proposal from the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) asking for the current mandate of the Hong Kong Parliament to continue following the decision by the authorities of the territory to postpone the general election for the coronavirus -Pandemic.

The postponement has been criticized by the opposition, who see the decision as a ploy to prevent their possible victory in the elections against the current authorities on Beijing orders.

The postponement was ordered by Hong Kong General Manager Carrie Lam and is postponing the election to September 2021, exactly one year after its original date.
