The Chinese Coast Guard arrested ten people off the coast of Hong Kong on Thursday, including influential activist Andy Li who tried to “flee” to Taiwan from the Chinese Special Administrative Region.
The coast guards have said the ship was intercepted in Chinese waters southwest of Hong Kong, according to the South China Morning Cost newspaper. The authorities have launched investigations into several of them for illegally crossing borders.
Li, who was arrested earlier this month on alleged collusion with “foreign forces and money laundering” following the adoption of Hong Kong’s controversial national security law, has now been charged with “illegally crossing the border”. .
Hong Kong activists have faced a wave of arrests in recent weeks under the aforementioned law, which went into effect last June. The new ordinance, which has been condemned both locally and internationally, criminalizes subversion, secession, terrorism, and collusion with foreign countries that result in life imprisonment.
