The Chinese city of Canton in the south of the country has ordered the complete closure of one of its neighborhoods after discovering an outbreak of the variant of the coronavirus identified in India.
There are currently five confirmed cases with symptoms and another 21 asymptomatic cases between May 21 and this Sunday, which have been confirmed by the local health commission and reported by the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua.
As a result, residents of the five blocks covered by the Liwan Quarter are prohibited from leaving their homes, with the exception of registered members, to buy basic groceries.
In addition, all schools in Liwan, as well as some areas in various other parts of Guangzhou, must suspend class attendance. Indoor stadiums, wholesale markets and entertainment venues in the affected areas will also remain closed.
The authorities have not given a date for the end of these measures.
