The Chinese authorities have imprisoned around 400,000 people in Anxin County, Hebei Province, south of Beijing, to combat the spread of the coronavirus in connection with the outbreak of the Beijing Xinfadi wholesale market in June 11.
The drastic measure announced on Saturday was implemented immediately after 18 coronavirus cases were discovered, all related to the outbreak of the Beijing market. Up to five of these cases are asymptomatic, according to the Shanghai newspaper “Jiefang Daily”.
The authorities responsible for combating the corona virus have warned that the situation is “extremely serious” and have therefore justified these restrictions in order to avoid contamination with other regions and within the district itself.
It is nominally “closed management,” but it is comparable to detention in China at the height of the epidemic. Residents can only leave the house if they have to go to a hospital or work to prevent the epidemic.
