Mexico City’s Minister of Civil Security, Omar García Harbuch, was attacked this Friday morning for an “attack” that resulted in “deaths and several detainees,” said Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.
The attack, which was not claimed by any group, took place shortly after 6.30 a.m. (local time). The incident happened at the crossroads between Paseo de la Reforma and Monte Blanco, when the convoy of the city council was intercepted by a group waiting for him.
“I am in coordination with the National Guard and am taking the necessary measures to ensure security in the city,” said the mayor on her Twitter account. The Mexico City Prosecutor, Ernestina Godoy, has announced that an investigation into these events has begun, and 12 people have already been arrested.
Sheinbaum has confirmed García Harbuch’s evacuation to a hospital where “he is well and he is out of danger”. The mayor has attributed the attack to the “great work” of the García Harbuch office to “guarantee peace and tranquility in the Mexican capital”.
