Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro mourns the loss of “one of the greatest artists of her generation”
Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça died this Friday in an airplane accident at the age of 26, according to the military fire brigade of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais (CBMMG), where the accident occurred, confirmed.

The singer’s team, for their part, has confirmed the death and stated that in addition to Mendonça, the singer’s producer, her uncle, the pilot and the plane’s co-pilot were also killed in the accident.

For his part, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has mourned the death of the singer, whom he has described as “one of the greatest artists of her generation”, in a Twitter message.
“The feeling is that we have lost a very close person because Marília was always present in our lives through her songs,” said the president.
The Special Secretariat for Culture of Brazil has sent a message recognizing the singer’s legacy and affirming that Mendonça “leaves a legacy for Brazilian regional music and culture”.
Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also lamented the death of the artist, who emphasized her “charisma and disrespect” and wished “strength” to “all who lost a loved one in the accident”.
The causes of the accident are not yet known, but Minas Gerais police have dispatched a forensic team and investigators to the area. The Air Force is expected to be tasked with investigating the incident.
Marília Mendonça was one of the most popular singers in Brazil and winner of a Latin Grammy 2019 for the best album of Sertaneja music, a genre from the south-east of the country.
