The Brazilian military police tearfully dispersed a demonstration in the streets of Sao Paulo against President Jair Bolsonaro’s government this Sunday when a small group of people headed toward a further concentration of supporters of the chief of the Brazilian state.
Police officials said, according to the O Globo newspaper, “a small group of infiltrated people attacked some officers and threw stones and other objects.” They are vandals, not demonstrators. We regret and reject this kind of stance, “said spokesman for the military police, Lieutenant Colonel Emerson Massera.
“We regret that the demonstration was peaceful,” said Massera, who recalled that a judicial decision last Friday to ban antagonistic demonstrations was held in the same area of the city in Sao Paulo.
The police action took place when a small group of demonstrators continued the protest by going to Paulista Avenue, where, according to ‘O Globo’, around 40 Bolsonaro supporters had gathered to show their support.
