The Baltic countries, Poland, Denmark and the Czech Republic are calling for Belarus to be sanctioned

August 14, 2020

A group of six EU countries, led by Estonia, has been asking in the past few days to sanction the Belarusian regime for repressing the protests that broke out across the country following last Sunday’s presidential elections.

Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Denmark and the Czech Republic have followed a declaration from Tallinn calling on the EU Foreign Council, which met in an extraordinary way this Friday, to take steps in this direction.

“We ask for the support of civil society in Belarus and the possibility of taking restrictive measures against those responsible for human rights abuses in the country to be discussed,” said this group of countries.
