Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen made a public apology this Sunday after the police surprised him and his wife outdoors in an Italian restaurant in central Vienna.
Van der Bellen, who has to face a fine of up to 30,000 euros, confirmed what happened to the newspaper “Kronen Zeitung” before apologizing. According to his version, he lost track of the time when he spoke to his wife in a restaurant after midnight after eating with friends.
The police identified them at 0.00 a.m. when they were drinking the drinks, one hour later than the scheduled closing time, at 11 p.m.
The president immediately sent his apology through the newspaper. “I went out to eat for the first time since giving birth with two friends and my wife. Then we talked and unfortunately lost track of time. I’m really sorry. It was a mistake,” he said.
