Mount Aso, the main volcano on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, erupted on Wednesday morning, the country’s weather agency reported.

The volcanic ash flew more than a kilometer out of the crater and reached a height of around 3,500 meters, said the weather authority, which also warned residents of Kyushu not to approach the volcano under any circumstances.

There are currently no reports of injuries from the eruption of the volcano in southwestern Japan, which is 1,592 meters high.

Japan is surrounded by a volcanic belt on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and is home to more than 100 active volcanoes, about 50 of which are constantly monitored.
