The Interim President of Bolivia’s government, Jeanine Áñez, announced this Friday the impending “explosive” phase of the country’s coronavirus pandemic, which has confirmed 35,528 cases and 1,271 deaths.
“Without a doubt, this is an alarming moment. In the past few days we have had thousands of cases and dozens of deaths, which makes us see that the situation is already becoming dangerous for a so-called explosive pandemic”, the national Head of epidemiology, Virgilio Prieto, has regretted and warned that the number of cases has doubled within two weeks.
The month of July has the highest number of people infected every day with 1,301 new cases on Thursday and deaths on the same day. As Prieto has indicated in statements to the newspaper “El Deber”, the numbers are “not misleading”. “We are in an accelerating phase of transmission with the massive spread of infections.”
In this sense, he campaigned for “protecting the population” through biosecurity measures. Between June 2 and July 2, Bolivia registered 24,537 new infections, tripling the infection rate. Death statistics also show similar numbers. There were 376 deaths on June 2 and a month later the number increased to 1,271, more than three times the original value.
