Algerian President Abdelmayid Tebune stressed that the draft constitution passed on Sunday represents progress for “a new Algeria”, as a result of protests that began in 2019 in favor of reforming the country’s political system, provoked by the fall of Abdelaziz Buteflika.

Tebune has stated that the draft of the new Magna Carta “contains all guarantees regarding the cleanliness of the elections” and has reiterated that “it is compulsory to initiate a review of the constitution which will renew the elected bodies”.

“The application of this constitutional amendment, which is subject to a referendum, requires the adjustment of the law to the new era in favor of global reform of the state and the restoration of its institutions and powers,” argued the president-elect after the presidential elections in December 2019.
