The Tanzanian ruling party chose the country’s current president, John Magufuli, as candidate for the next presidential election scheduled for next October.
All 1,822 delegates to the Chama Cha Mapinduzi National Congress (CCM) voted for Magufuli’s candidacy for the election.
According to the RFI radio station, the president will strive for a new mandate in the next presidential election for five years. The president came to power for the first time in 2015 and was sharply criticized by the opposition, who accused him of restricting dissent and freedom of expression in the country.
To be a candidate, Magufuli had to find 250 sponsors in twelve regions of the mainland and Zanzibar.
