The Syrian government announced on Wednesday that the United States is a “rogue and criminal state” after US President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that he had been working on plans to assassinate his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al Assad.
Trump said in an interview with Fox Television that he had “eliminated” Assad, but that then US Secretary of Defense James Mattis had expressed his opposition to this option.
“I would have eliminated him. I had prepared him. Mattis didn’t want to do it. Mattis was a very overrated general,” he said, confirming the related information in the book published in 2018 by journalist Bob Woodward.
The book mentioned above reports that US President Mattis called to tell him that he intended to kill Al Assad in response to a chemical weapon attack in 2017. However, Trump himself stated in 2018 that this possibility “was never discussed” and that “the book is fiction”.
