The Swiss Health Office reported 383 new cases of coronavirus within 24 hours on Wednesday. This is the highest daily rate of infection since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in April.
The Swiss authorities have registered 40,645 positives for the coronavirus, while 4,514 people are still being admitted to hospitals. According to official statistics, which also include Liechtenstein, 1,723 patients have died.
Several cantons have regained the obligation to wear masks in shops in response to the increase in cases. In the city of Zurich, this measure will take effect on Thursday.
Swiss Health Minister Alain Berset has warned that the situation could get out of hand if cases continue to increase. “It’s not easy to follow the rules of removal and quarantine, but do it,” he urged in a public appearance last week.
