Sudan’s first ambassador to the US in 23 years hands Trump his references

September 18, 2020

Noureldin Satti, Sudan’s new ambassador to the United States, officially handed over his credentials to US President Donald Trump on Thursday, making his country’s first diplomatic representative in Washington in 23 years, reports the Sudan Tribune.

The gesture marks the climax of the rapprochement process between the two countries, which after the fall of the regime of Omar Hasan al-Bashir in April 2019 had only one managing director as a representative for more than two decades.

The United States, which has not yet appointed its future ambassador to Khartoum, is currently discussing removing Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism it added in 1993.

The formal accreditation of the Sudanese ambassador comes less than a month after a historic visit by Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo to Khartoum, during which he met, among others, the Prime Minister of the transitional government, Abdullah Hamdok.
