HONG KONG, 2 Sep. (DPA / EP) –
Thousands of students from colleges and universities have started a strike on Monday in support of the demonstrations and prodemocratic protests registered in Hong Kong since last June and on the occasion of the first day of academic year.
A large number of students have gathered in the vicinity of their respective colleges and institutes dressed in uniform and with gas masks in the framework of a student strike called for this Monday's day.
On the other hand, the Hong Kong subway has a strong police presence after the riots recorded over the weekend, which resulted in the closure of several lines.
It is expected that several demonstrations will take place this Monday in the special Chinese administrative region, which includes a student march and a demonstration in front of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
On Sunday, Hong Kong protesters focused their sights on transport networks to the territory's airport in an attempt to paralyze flights as happened fifteen days ago, although the facilities are still operating normally for now.
Participants in the demonstration came to break into the same airport for a few minutes before being evicted by the police, according to witnesses of the 'Hong Kong Free Press', and return to the barricades that have established in some access points to Terminal 1 .
More than 60 people have been arrested over the weekend in a series of anti-government protests, including a 13-year-old student. The protests began on June 9 against a bill of extradition to mainland China.
