There is no car that evokes more affection and nostalgia in Latin America (especially Mexico) than the icon Volkswagen Beetleso much so that he is fondly known as “Vocho”. The two-door sedan earned a place in popular culture because it was the first car of many and is still fondly remembered, even though the last car was produced in Latin America on July 30, 2003.
It seems that love for the famous sedan crossed boundaries when Chinese automaker ORA Motor unveiled an electric version of the car at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show.
As reported by the newspaper millenniumThe Great Wall Motors conglomerate company showed a modern take on the Volkswagen New Beetle called ORA Punk Cat. It has four doors, white leather seats, chrome and wood dashboards, and digital screens.
Volkswagen could sue
While the similarities between the ORA Punk Cat are very obvious, technically it is not a Vocho as it is not involved in Volkswagen. The German company referred to the website Carscoopthat his lawyers “are reviewing this matter with regard to a violation of the utility model or the construction rights of Volkswagen AG and that we reserve the right to take the necessary legal steps.”
It is worth remembering that Volkswagen registered the eBeetle name last year, so it certainly wouldn’t hesitate to sue the case with the Chinese company.
