South Korean President Moon Jae In on Friday appointed the Chief of Staff of the South Korean Army, General Suh Wook, as the new Minister of Defense, as announced by the country’s Office of the President.
Upon his appointment in a confirmation hearing, General Jeong Kyeong Doo will replace as the first defense chief with military experience during the lunar administration.
Suh, born in 1963 in Gwangju, 270 kilometers south of Seoul, graduated from the South Korean Military Academy in 1985. From 2011 to 2014 he served in the Combined Forces Command (CFC) of South Korea and the USA. before serving as the commanding general of the First Army Corps and chief operating officer of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
The appointment fits in with rumors of the upcoming cabinet reshuffle this month, which would affect at least two ministers who had replaced several of their chief secretaries in recent days, according to Yonhap news agency.
